Caltech Student Wins Churchill Scholarship

California Institute of Technology student Vivek Narsimhan has been awarded a Churchill Scholarship for the academic year 2008–09. The chemical engineering major plans to complete the Certificate in Advanced Mathematics (Maths Part III) at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

Caltech Helps Students Afford College

The California Institute of Technology will eliminate loans for its neediest undergraduate students by replacing loans with additional gift aid, such as scholarships and grants. Beginning with undergraduates entering in the fall of 2008, most domestic students whose total family incomes are $60,000 per year or less will be offered a financial-aid package that substitutes scholarship gift aid for loans.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Commits $200 Million Support for Thirty-Meter Telescope

The California Institute of Technology and the University of California have received a $200 million commitment over nine years from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation toward the further development and construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT). Funding under this commitment will be shared equally between the two universities, with matching gifts from the two institutions expected to bring the total to $300 million. When built, TMT will be the largest telescope in the world.

The Weston Havens Foundation has recently awarded $1.3 million in philanthropic gifts to the California Institute of Technology that will fund five separate research projects. Faculty working on these projects received $260,000 each to cover such wide-ranging topics as stem cell differentiation dynamics, the gastrointestinal connection to autism, and treating viral diseases.

Thirty-Meter Telescope Project Receives $15 Million from Moore Foundation

The California Institute of Technology and the Regents of the University of California have each received $7.5 million in additional funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the development of the Thirty-Meter Telescope. The TMT is being developed by a U.S.-Canadian team with construction anticipated to begin in April 2009. The new grants augment the $64 million already planned for the design development phase of the TMT project, which included $35 million previously awarded to Caltech and UC by the Moore Foundation.

Like many Japanese schoolchildren, Hirosi Ooguri read about the physicist Hideki Yukawa, who became Japan's first Nobel laureate in 1949 for predicting the existence of mesons, elementary particles that hold atomic nuclei together. Ooguri says, "I was very impressed by the power of mathematics in discovering how the universe works."
