U.S. Representative Bernie Sanders to Speak at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif.—Bernie Sanders, Vermont's at-large member of the United States House of Representatives, will discuss the Patriot Act at the third presentation in the 2003-2004 season of the Social Activism Speaker Series at the California Institute of Technology. This event will take place on Thursday, April 15, at 8 p.m. in Ramo Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

In Congress, where he is the only Independent, Sanders has supported policies often at odds with the prevailing political and corporate interests. He made headlines when he led Vermonters on a campaign across Canada to buy cheaper prescription drugs, helping launch the debate on health care reform. He was one of only 66 members in the House to vote against the Patriot Act, and continues today to fight against the erosion of civil liberties. As founder of the House Progressive Caucus, Sanders has built a reputation for being a strong voice for the poor and middle classes.

This is the fifth year for the Social Activism Speaker Series, which focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to share their experiences and perspectives with the Caltech community and the public. This series is coordinated with the help of the Caltech Y, and is made possible by contributions from the Moore-Hufstedler Fund, Student Affairs, the Alumni Association, Campus Life, the Diversity Program Fund, the Graduate Student Council, Jack and Edith Roberts, and the Associated Students of Caltech.

Ramo Auditorium is near the center of the Caltech campus. Parking is available in the lots south of Del Mar Boulevard between Wilson and Chester avenues, and in the Wilson Avenue parking structures between San Pasqual Street and Del Mar Boulevard.
