Two Caltech Students Awarded Goldwater Scholarships

PASADENA, Calif.--Two students from the California Institute of Technology have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year.

Juniors Matthew Fisher, from Charlotte, North Carolina, majoring in computer science, and Benjamin Golub, a mathematics major from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, are this year's recipients.

The scholarship program, honoring the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater, is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is considered one of the premier undergraduate awards of its type in these fields.

This year the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded a total of 323 academic merit scholarships to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from across the nation. The recipients were chosen from 1,081 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The foundation, in its 20-year history, has awarded 4,885 scholarships worth approximately $48 million. The trustees plan to award about 300 scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year. ###
