Three Caltech Undergraduate Students Receive Goldwater Scholarships

PASADENA, Calif.—Three students from the California Institute of Technology have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2004-05 academic year. The scholarship program, honoring the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater, was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is considered one of the premier undergraduate awards of its type in these fields.

The students are Brant Carlson, a junior from Libertyville, Illinois, majoring in physics; Patrick Hummel, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nevada, majoring in mathematics; and Jennifer Li, a junior from Morgantown, West Virginia, majoring in biology.

This year the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded a total of 310 academic merit scholarships to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from across the nation. The recipients were chosen from 1,113 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The foundation, in its 16-year history, has awarded 4,272 scholarships worth approximately $42 million.
