In this presentation, DuVall will discuss civilian-based nonviolent action in the world today, from Nepal and Belarus to Papua and the streets of Los Angeles. He will address issues and criticisms of nonviolent protests, particularly as they relate to what is termed "colored revolutions."
Duvall was the executive producer of the two-part Emmy-nominated PBS television series A Force More Powerful and is coauthor of the companion book of the same name.
The International Center on Nonviolent Conflict is an independent, nonprofit educational foundation that, according to its mission statement, "develops and encourages the study and use of civilian-based, nonmilitary strategies to establish and defend human rights, democracy and justice worldwide."
This is the seventh year for the Social Activism Speaker Series, which focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to share their experiences and perspectives with the Caltech community and the public. This student-run series is coordinated with the help of the Caltech Y, and is made possible by contributions from the Moore and Hufstedler Funds, the Administrative Committee on Diversity and Minority Affairs, Student Affairs, Campus Life, the Diversity Program Fund, the Alumni Association, Jack and Edith Roberts, the Graduate Student Council, and the Associated Students of Caltech, along with the Caltech Y.
The Beckman Institute auditorium is located near the northwest corner of the Caltech campus. Parking is available in the lots south of Del Mar Boulevard between Wilson and Chester avenues, and in the Wilson Avenue parking structures between San Pasqual Street and Del Mar Boulevard.
