The one-year merit award stipends range from $19,002 to $33,348, the largest amount equaling full tuition plus room and board for an academic year. Of the 50 winners, 11 received awards in the amount of $33,348; 18 received full-tuition awards of $25,335; and 21 were recipients of $19,002 scholarships. Winners of the Caltech merit awards consist of recipients of the Rosalind W. Alcott Merit Scholarship, the Caltech Upper Class Merit Award, the Carnation Scholarship, and the John Stauffer Merit Scholarship.
With an outstanding faculty that includes four Nobel laureates, and such off-campus facilities as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Palomar Observatory, and the W. M. Keck Observatory, the California Institute of Technology is one of the world's premiere research centers. The Institute offers instruction in science and engineering for a student body of approximately 900 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate students, who maintain a high level of scholarship and intellectual achievement.
U.S. News & World Report continues to rank Caltech's undergraduate and graduate programs as being among the nation's best. The average SAT score of members of recent incoming freshman classes has consistently been 1500.
