Combat Correspondent Kevin Sites to Speak at Caltech

Kevin Sites, award-winning journalist and news correspondent for the Yahoo! Hot Zone, will discuss his journalistic memoir, In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars, and the accompanying documentary, A World of Conflict, at the California Institute of Technology on Wednesday, November 14, at 8 pm, in Ramo Auditorium.

Cable television started making people over in shows like Fashion Emergency, MTV Made, What Not to Wear, and Beauty and the Geek--all showing young Americans the importance of looking professional and fashionable for a variety of occasions. If one visits the California Institute of Technology campus during recruiting season, it will be obvious that many students don't watch enough cable TV.

It all started last fall, in a classroom at Caltech. A team of students in Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ken Pickar's course, Product Design for the Developing World, decided to create wheelchairs for people in developing countries that could tackle the rugged terrain. With two bicycles and three creative brains contributing, the project took off.

And throughout the ages, olives have had a ubiquitous presence in world cultures--as nutrition, as a medicinal and health elixir, and as a beauty aid. In today's times, olives will play a novel role as part of an environmental sustainability initiative at the California Institute of Technology.

Weston Havens Foundation Awards Multiple Grants to Caltech

The Weston Havens Foundation has recently awarded $1.3 million in philanthropic gifts to the California Institute of Technology that will fund five separate research projects. Faculty working on these projects received $260,000 each to cover such wide-ranging topics as stem cell differentiation dynamics, the gastrointestinal connection to autism, and treating viral diseases.

Thirty-Meter Telescope Project Receives $15 Million from Moore Foundation

The California Institute of Technology and the Regents of the University of California have each received $7.5 million in additional funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the development of the Thirty-Meter Telescope. The TMT is being developed by a U.S.-Canadian team with construction anticipated to begin in April 2009. The new grants augment the $64 million already planned for the design development phase of the TMT project, which included $35 million previously awarded to Caltech and UC by the Moore Foundation.
