$10 Million Gift Will Create New Engineering Center at Caltech

The Gates Frontiers Fund has pledged $10 million to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to support the establishment of the Charles C. Gates Center for Mechanical Engineering within the soon-to-be-renovated Thomas Laboratory on the Caltech campus.

Keck Foundation has awarded $2.3 million to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to fund the Keck Array--a suite of three microwave polarimeters at the South Pole--and the corresponding research initiative, "Imaging the Beginning of Time: A Search for the Signature of Inflation in the Cosmic Microwave Background."

Once considered a messy sidewalk annoyance on the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus, the fruit of the 130 olive trees lining the campus pathways is now being embraced for its contribution to Caltech's sustainability. The olives will be harvested and pressed into olive oil in Caltech's second annual Olive Harvest Festival on Friday, November 7.

The National Science Foundation's Expeditions in Computing program has awarded $10 million to the Molecular Programming Project, a collaborative effort by researchers at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Washington to establish a fundamental approach to the design of complex molecular and chemical systems based on the principles of computer science.

The California Institute of Technology recently announced new awardees for three long-standing programs aimed at increasing diversity in science, engineering, and technology fields. The programs include the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF); MURF, a summer fellowship for undergraduates around the country to conduct research at Caltech; and the Young Engineering and Science Scholars (YESS). Caltech recently selected the awardees for each of these programs.

Robert C. Bonner, senior partner of Sentinel HS Group LLC; John S. Chen (MS '79), chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Sybase Inc.; and Peter D. Kaufman, chairman and chief executive officer of Glenair Inc. have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology. Gil I. Elbaz (BS '91) has also been elected to the board as a Young Alumni Trustee. The announcement was made by Jean-Lou Chameau, president of Caltech.
